Staffelter Hof – PortuGeezer 2020
Atypical blend of two Portuguese varieties - Arinto and Fernão Pires - that Jan Klein planted in the Mosel over 6 years ago as part of what he calls a 'climate change' experiment. He was sent cuttings of these varieties from his friend Pedro at Vale de Capucha in Portugal.
This wine is roughly half and half of each variety, and was made as per the standard pet nat method, or the ancestral method. The result is absolutely brilliant. A wine of pure class and elegance. Great balance of yeastiness and fruit underpinned by a potent backbone of acidity that keeps it incredibly drinkable. Lovely texture and creamy bubbles. One of a kind, and a must-try.
Made by Jan Klein, the latest generation at the helm on this historical estate which has been in the family since 1805, but operating as a winery since 862...!
